BPTO and SEBRAE sign cooperation agreement for stimulating the use of IP by small and medium enterprises.

On April 30, 2021, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) and the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae) signed a cooperation agreement aiming at stimulating the use of Industrial Property (IP) by small businesses. The event took place in accordance with this year’s theme of World Intellectual Property Day, “IP & SMEs: Taking your ideas to Market”, celebrated last April 26.

According to said agreement, the BPTO will be responsible for preparing qualified material and offering courses, webinars, and mentoring; creating a special fund for IP creation and management; as well as developing a support service for trademark registration. The training set forth in the agreement should be made available to more than 2,000 entrepeneur researchers selected by Sebrae.

Another important topic of the agreement is the strengthening of the national Market for Geographical Indication (IG), through the support of new 30 filings before the BPTO and creation of a data intelligence system focused on this field. The agreement further foresees the structuring of the Brazilian stamp for Geographical Indications.
