New General Personal Data Protection Law is postponed until May 2021.

On April 30, 2020, the Federal Government published in the Official Gazette the Provisional Measure No. 959/20, determining the date the General Personal Data Protection  Law (LGPD – Law No. 13,709/2018) will become effectiveInitially scheduled for August 2020, the law will now become effective on May 3, 2021.

The postponement was a matter already under discussion in the National Congress, after the approval of Bill of Law No. 1,179/2020 by the Senate, which provided for the extension of the vacatio legis until January 2021.

The Executive Branch will have an additional period of time to structure the National Data Protection Authority, which is an indispensable entity for the proper inspection and application of the new law.
