Brazil and China Extend Patent Examination Acceleration Program Until 2029

Brazil and China have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to extend, until 2029, the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) pilot program, established between the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (INPI) and the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA).

The PPH allows applicants to leverage the patent examination results obtained in one country to accelerate prosecution in the other. In practice, this means greater efficiency in the processing of
applications, cost reduction, and the possibility of strengthening innovation protection in two of the world’s largest markets.

Beyond faster procedures, the extension of the program represents progress in bilateral cooperation between Brazil and China in the field of intellectual property, fostering the exchange of technical information and the harmonization of procedures between patent offices. For companies and inventors, the initiative underscores the strategic importance of internationalizing the protection of their technologies, while broadening business opportunities and competitiveness on a global scale.
